Maria Kanavaki was born and brought up in Heraklion, Crete and embarked on her musical journey at an early age, when she took her first piano classes at the Hellenic Conservatory with Mrs Vilma Adonakaki. Her first attempt at performing was when she met Miltos Paschalidis with whom she still maintains a very good working relationship and friendship until today. At the age of eighteen and under fortuitous circumstances she found herself studying Economics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. At the same time she continued and accomplished her piano studies at the Macedonian Conservatory of Thessaloniki with Mrs Erietta Alakiozidou. Her studies at Thessaloniki were instrumental in her life as, this is where she met and collaborated with the musician, composer and singer, Christos Pavlis. A few years later she moved to Athens and started taking vocal classes with Krini Pafitou and later on with Martha Moreleon. Following her studies, she gave many live performances all over Greece and Cyprus together with Miltos Paschalidis and other famous composers and singers such as Vassilis Skoulas, Lakis Chalkias, Thanassis Gaifilias, Kostas Livadas, Stavros Siolas, and Giannis Charoulis.
