Vakakis Dimitris

Dimitris Vakakis was born in Hania, 1974. When he was two years old, he asked his parents a lyre for his birthday thus expressing his interest for the Cretan music. By the time he was eight years old, he started lyre lessons with Kostas Mountakis as his teacher. After five years of lyre studies and three years of theoretical studies, he received with honors his Cretan lyre diploma from the Greek Conservatoire.
Vakakis started playing for friends during glenti (massive gatherings of people at the village square where food, wine, Cretan music and dancing are the protagonists). The positive critics he received soon lead to professional performances. He has also played to a number of concerts abroad to countries as Finland, USA, France and Portugal.
Nowadays, Dimitris Vakakis apart from his musical performances also gives lyre lessons at the branch of the Greek Conservatoire in Rethimnon and also works with NELE in Rethimnon.
