Melas Zafiris

Zafiris Melas, a brilliant person, a fine artist, a valuable ornament of greek song, the always ours one, the simple, approachable person.

He was born at Xanthi, on the 13th of October and was raised in a neighbourhood among poor people, yet with rich sentiments. The loss of his parents, turned out to be a turning point in his life, which is something that forced him to be lonely among three sisters, at a very sensitive age. These were coincidences that forced Zafiris to struggle in life since his early childhood. However, through this ceaseless struggle, he was given the chance to express the bursting vigour that distinguishes him, the endless love he has for the fellow-beings and of course, the unique tamperament of his, regarding music and singing. These years, composed the stamp of his creativity.

Since an early age, his inclination about music and song, was distinguished. Thus, he was found, later, singing in groups of folkloric songs. There, he learnt and loved the folk songs. Through this singing-wandering, he was 'detected' by Antonis Stamboulis and Poly Vairemidi, the owners of record company - Cosmos. This was the boundary stone in his artistic consolidation at folklore song. Since then, Zafiris' life, also changed. His upward way, had already begun and his brilliant talent had already started illuminating.

He is married, nearly 30 years, to Constantina, with whom he has three kids, Thodoris, Anna and Poly. Family, stands for Zafiris the permanent and endless vital source of power. It is the ingredient, that maintains and forces him to be a dignified artist as well as an incorruptible personality. His greatest secret, that keeps him disturbing young, is his two grandchildren, Zafiris and Constantina. Along with them, he shares another one love of his, sea, every summer escaping everyday's routine. A usual place where he escapes, is a picturesque village of Halkidiki, Playa. There, he enjoys sun, his beloved one, and his hobby - fishing. This, makes him return each time more renewed, more kind of "our person".

An important element of revival and a source of vigour, for Zafiris, is his pure real friends and the people that love him, presenting him this excellent position in stardom.

He knows how to keep relations for many-many years and make people talk about him lovingly. After all, this is not accidental, that there are people by his side for 40 years, sharing with him difficulties and happy moments.

Some of them, such as Hristos Fanaras - a great conductor of bouzouki - Dimitris Rakintzis - accompanying him, playing bouzouki and writing music for his songs - Antonis Stamboulis and Poly Vairamidi, manager and friends, will talk to us about veteran Zafiris Melas.
