Biography

Iakovos Kambanellis was born in 1922. He published his first work in 1950 and since then, he has dominated the theatrical stardom.
In 1942, he was arrested by the Gestapo and taken to a concentration camp in Austria where he was kept up to May 1945.
His experiences in the concentration camp combined with his social sensitiveness –characteristic of the man Iakovos Kambanellis- are reflected in his prolific and diachronic oeuvre. He was the person expressing the pioneering social ideals during the dictatorship as well as the post-dictatorship period (e.g. “Paramythi xoris Onoma” (A story without a name) with the music of Manos Hatzidakis). Very important famous Greek actors and actresses played in his plays that were staged by famous directors. Iakovos Kambanellis is also well known for his film scripts which were internationally recognized (“Stella” by Michael Cacoyannis with Melina Merkouri and “Drakos” (The Killer) by Nikos Koundouros). He has been honored by the Greek state with distinctions and titles for what he has offered to Modern Greek Theater for almost half a century.
